Day 10: Sasquatch Crossing

***Just to clarify a minor thing before I begin- this is day 10 of our departure from Atlanta, but day 8 of us driving. We took a full day off in Utah and in Vancouver.***

As I stated in my last post we were planning on having a short(er) drive today and end at a motel called The Shepherd's Inn (20 miles outside of Ft. St. John), however we decided to press on after realizing that:
A- it was still semi-early (4 pm) and we weren't tired yet
B- the planned drive tomorrow was a good bit further than we thought
C- we wanted to go ahead and knock some miles off of tomorrow's route and drive more today

The drive was pretty again today and we saw our very first MAMA AND BABY MOOSE!!!!! It was exciting for sure. The mama moose had a polka-dotted coat, and the baby moose was a light brown. After we passed we saw them from our rear view mirrors dart out in front of a truck! Luckily he swerved and all was fine. We then passed through the Rocky Mountain ranges that were still capped with snow, tons of huge rivers, creeks, and rolling hills. We were up and down and curving everywhere on this drive today and passed through several points of construction as well. We have had to stop for roadwork every day now it seems. But all in all, the drive went smoothly and we are safe and sound.

We are now at a motel called Sasquatch Crossing... I couldn't make this place up if I tried. We are not in a town or even by another motel.  It is a small motel/RV park in the middle of nowhere that has 2 gas pumps, a little diner, and some knick-knacks to buy if you want.  A place like this shows up in scary movies where the clueless travelers get attacked by some trucker wackjob with a chainsaw... yikes! But with another 1 1/2  hrs behind us, we needed to stop because we would eventually be stranded for the next 100 miles without anywhere to sleep if we didn't. So we checked-in to this overpriced, old as dirt, Sasquatch Crossing motel and crossed our fingers that the beds and rooms wouldn't be atrocious and bug-filled! While they have attempted remodeling and repainting (the hallways are a glorious bright purple with gold trimmed doors and the caulking job done on the ancient tub looks comparable to something my two year old niece could do) it's an old place run by a bunch of nice country Canadian folk.  We had a really good dinner downstairs as well and while the prices seemed a bit high (i.e. $8.00 for 2 eggs, hashbrowns, and toast) it was a lot of food and pretty good. I'm just happy because I don't have to sleep in the car...or worse OUTSIDE!  Oh- and we can't drink the water, but they do have free wi-fi...hence my posting this blog. So amen to that!
(Now my mother would NEVER step one pretty little foot in a place like this, but it'll do for us. ;) )

It's is 10:30 and is just now looking somewhat dark out... my how crazy! Tomorrow we head past Fort Nelson and into Coal River for our next stop. We should see and experience a lot more in the coming days and I am excited! All our thanks to the good Lord for keeping us safe yet another day. SDG!

Bye for now,
Jen

Total hours: 7 hours

  1. Sounds like you both are enjoying the trip. Riding all day can get very old. You should have bought bed bug spray in a drugstore some where. Your right, Kristi wouldn't be caught dead in that place. That's why I like our pull along home behind me!!
    Your doing a great job.
