Projects Galore!

Hey ya'll! OH man this post is gonna be full of my latest little projects around the house and I hope you enjoy.  It kind-of explains my neglect of my blog here lately.  (that among other things!) :S

Other than our house projects, we haven't gone anywhere outside of the Anchorage area.  Two Sundays ago we went redneck fishing in Anchorage.... yup, I said REDNECK FISHIN'! (because that's what it was)  We were fishing in the river by train tracks, in this thick, slippery, goopy gray mud.  There were only few spots you could (sort of) walk down through and even then the pace you walk is slower than molasses! (I finally had empathy for snails... haha)  To top it off, the etiquette in this river was gone.  Layne and I, and two other friends were fishing from the bank when a group of guys come wading down the river and literally stop RIGHT IN FRONT OF US TO FISH!!!!! They were casting in towards the bank at us...as if we weren't there casting out already!! It was, as I'm sure you can tell by my typing, a very annoying redneck day.  The only thing we came close to catching is one of those folks in the face! phew! Ok, so on to my fun projects....

We finally finished painting the downstairs bathroom/laundry area and it's awesome! I ripped out the old UUGGGGGLLLYY cabinet and Layne put up the new mirror and new light fixture.... ahhh much better! I then painted my laundry area a very happy happy color (so it would cheer me up while doing laundry because I HATE doing laundry!! While the area is still not decorated, the walls are at least DONE! :D
BEFORE....

AFTER!
I also took on a little project when Layne was at work.  My pantry door (along with all our kitchen cabinets) were haunting me with their painful old fake wooden "glow".  Soo I decided to tackle the only thing I could...the pantry door.  I wanted to make it a chalkboard so I could write on it and because I thought it would bring a cool charm to the kitchen.  I want a country/rustic style kitchen and home and this is my humble attempt....

I will probably add more to this, but it works like a charm for now! I used a primer and then Valspar Chalkboard paint.  I highly recommend!

I've also done small projects, spent hours sifting through wedding pictures and picking some out to develop, multiple trips to various craft stores, Walmart, the BX, and Costco.
Lots of grocery trips and shopping for our home.  I finally found some awesome chairs for our kitchen table (at a garage sale!)!  I  put on a burlap runner I bought at Michael's on the table, added an awesome antique lantern, then the chairs...and I'm one step closer to my country/rustic style!  I also purchased this old ugly metal corner shelf.  After 3 layers of paint, with a final top coat color, I have a quaint and colorful shelf for my kitchen. I may distress it some to let the other colors poke through, but we'll see. I'll show a finished kitchen picture once I'm actually "finished"!

BEFORE

DURING

DONE!
I have a lot of "P" letters I acquired as gifts from the wedding, so I took one of the larger ones and spent two days strategically wrapping twine to use... somewhere! It was a project a bit harder than I thought only because of the shape. I think I may add it to my wreath and put it on our front door...hmmm!
I made the wreath last night but decided to add one of the smaller "P"s to it instead- so this one below still needs a home...

When my mom and mother-in-law get here tonight, I finally will get to REALLY decorate my home and put up our dozens of pictures, and buy some much needed furniture for various areas of our home.  I CANNOT WAIT to see them! Moms always know what to do and how to decorate! =)

This past Friday Layne and I had a chill night and finally went to see a movie!  We saw The Dark Knight Rises in IMax and it was awesome!! I highly recommend seeing it...if you liked the other Batman movies anyway.  Saturday Layne and I went down the road to hike a short trail called Thunderbird Falls with Dan and Michelle.  There were some pretty crazy steep hills and we made a trek through the river, hopping stone to stone in order to have a better view of the waterfall!  We got a better view and got wet in the process from the sprays of the waterfall.  It was very cool.  =)

We have our first house guest... Bernie! He's our neighbors dog (we are watching him while they are in Seattle) and is the happiest little thing I've ever seen! Rajah is gonna have a great little friend up here. =)
He's already acting like he owns the place! ;)

My mom, Layne's mom, and my sweet Rajah will be here in 5 hours!! I'm so excited!! Im praying that my poor little pup doesn't die of a heart attack on the route up either! She probably thinks we sent her away forever! =(

This Saturday we are driving to Seward (or close to it)  for a 7 hour cruise and at some point we will go to the Alaska State Fair (among dozens of other things)! I'm looking forward to this week with them very much.  I wish they were able to bring my entire family up here! Oh well! I hope everyone has a wonderful rest of the week!

My Passion

Whooo boy what a crazy couple of weeks this has been!! I cannot believe we have been in our new home over a month now! I'm so sorry I've been MIA, but the to-do list for the house, the social gatherings, the exploring, and the business has kept me away.  =(

I've been wanting to write this specific post for at least 2 weeks now, it's my passion and a bit of my heart.

There are many of you who know me really well, have watched me grow up from various ages, and know my heart.  But many of you may not.  So here it a little bit about me, or should I say one aspect of who I am and what I love.   Growing up everyone is asked the same questions in various forms, but is usually "what do you want to do when you grow up/graduate college/after you marry him [her]?"  My response has always been, "well, I'm not sure exactly...but I want to work around people and help people.  I just really want to help people!"  So of course you are thinking, ok so become a nurse.  That route is NOT for me (for multiple reasons actually), but God put best friends and family in my life who are nurses so I think that is as close as I'll ever come.  :) haha   But my heart, my desire, my passion has always been to be somebody who can help others and while growing up I didn't know how I was going to do that.  I wasn't called to be a nurse, I have not felt the call to be a permanent missionary (though I've done several mission trips and loved every minute of it), and I've NEVER wanted to be in an office at a desk 24/7.  **please know I'm not knocking a desk job and I have huge admiration for those who work in a atmosphere like that.  My dad has worked a "desk job" my entire life to provide for my family and I am honored at his diligence and humbleness in it.**

So after graduating college with a degree I knew I'd never use (I have a BFA because I didn't know then what I wanted to get my degree in...) and almost 2 years of trying to find a "real job", my parents said "Jenni, why don't you become a personal trainer? You are always in the gym and love fitness and showing people how to work out, so why not get your certification?"  *AHA!* So I set out in finding the right process to go through and a legitimate company to gain my certification in.  Not only that, but I had started using products by Advocare the last year or so of college.  I joined the company to get a discount on my products mainly, but to share what I was doing if anyone were to ask.  I didn't really go beyond that.  But after using products steadily, graduating college and not having a gym to work out at, then coming home to live, I was constantly being asked what I was doing to lose weight.  Due to my lack of gym and steady exercise, all I could pin it on was the products... I wasn't TRYING to lose weight per se, I just knew how healthy and good they were for me,  so I incorporated them in my daily regimen to get the extra nutrition I wasn't getting from my food.  People also commented on how I was "shrinking" and all I can say to that was Catalyst

So back to my heart: In the past year or so I began to look at Advocare more seriously.  I attended some events, heard from others who have been doing the business side, and met some of the doctors, nutritionists, and athletic coaches who were involved in Advocare.  I was happy, very happy to hear their personal testimony's and stories. This wasn't a company looking a dollar signs first.  They were just like me, wanting to HELP others,  improve lives, and pay their bills.  I know many people slough off any kind of business that runs primarily through the internet and sounds like a MLM pyramid scheme... I know. I've been there. I've ignored other people "just trying to sell me something" too.  I get it.  Thing is, the deeper I've dug into the roots and foundation of Advocare, the more in love with this company I've become.  The founder created it for his family and for a way to help others improve their lives and earn a living.  It's most definitely not a get rich quick scheme like some (or many) believe.  Advocare actually means Advocates Caring for people.  Watch the video on Charlie Ragus, the founder of Advocare and be inspired.  He also had a passion for wanting to help people, just like I do.  The thing I can't figure out is why people so quickly shoo away those of us working an "abnormal job" who have a strong desire to simply HELP.  The people behind Advocare, working for Advocare are no different than the people sitting behind a desk (at a "real job") because at the end of the day we are all simply trying to earn a living...  Yet I know from being around HUNDREDS of other Advocare reps, they care about quality of life.  Not a single person I've met hates going in to work or is just trying to pound the pavement like a used car salesmen to screw you over and take your money.   They are PASSIONATE about helping others and passionate about improving lives- we are only given ONE body so put good into it.  (and I can guarantee that they feel ten times better than those who work at "normal" job!!) Advocare supports our troops with Operation Homefront as well! (which I obviously love even more-so now that I'm a military spouse!)

I honestly think if we opened up stores like a GNC then people would buy product and not care.    But since the founder didn't want to be bought out and wanted to keep it for the "advocates" to share by word of mouth, and to keep integrity, it automatically becomes (to some) a big scheme. (and I know plenty of fake sites out there so that's also why its hard to trust anything on the internet)  It's frustrating because many will go to Wal-Mart, or GNC, or some other website and purchase items that 1: they don't really know what's in them and 2: the employee working there probably doesn't care about you or WHAT you buy. I care. It breaks my heart when I hear about friends who are trying to lose weight and struggle or lose weight and use something cheap from Wal-Mart and end up with awful side effects.  I have friends who hardly eat anything and live everyday worried more about how they LOOK instead of how healthy they are (which in reality is the best way to look).  Losing weight or even gaining weight is such a tough thing and a mental thing, it's hard to go through it alone.  Everyone I've met so far in the Advocare family cares.  That's what I love about it and why I'm so passionate about it.  I love rejoicing with people who have done the 24 Day Challenge and seen the weight drop and inches lost. They feel great and are excited and THAT is rewarding for me! The products work and are SAFE.  I encourage people to analyze the website, read the ingredients, check out the science behind it: the doctors, nutritionists, sports advisors, etc who develop the products! You can ask questions and get an answer.  You can know that what you are putting into your body is safe and checked by a separate company, Informed Choice for anything that could be harmful or hazardous! (does GNC do that?!)

I simply want to help.  Being a personal trainer is very rewarding and working out/being active is necessary to our lives, but it's also in what we put in our bodies.  That's why I'm doing Advocare.  God has laid in me a desire to help, and this is the way I know how.  If' it's not for you then it's totally fine, but at least you know why I'm doing it.  Not to annoy you, not to rob you of your money, and definitely not to make you "one more person" who bought from me, but to help you achieve whatever goals you have for your own body and your own life.

I am sorry if that seemed like a huge rant, but if people only knew where many of us were coming from and why I was reaching out or why I was suggesting Advocare they'd be less afraid.  I'm a person who is always here if you need me.  I'm always going to try and help in any way I can.  I'm just glad to know I can work for a company who has the same passions and can lift each other up in a God- honoring atmosphere.  =)

I hope you all (whomever is still reading this anyways) have a wonderful Wednesday! Remember to get out and move: doing SOMETHING is better than NOTHING! God Bless!!

More updates and pictures on my house will follow!

Olympic Fever

Hey ya'll!!!  I think I should start out by "screaming" from my keyboard... USA! USA! USA! USA!

Last Friday I went to the airshow on base for the family only day with some of the other wives and got to see the Thunderbirds do a practice run and saw for the first time the F-22 Raptor demo.  It was awesome.  What was even more awesome is that I was in shorts and a tank top ALL DAY!!! I actually got some tan lines!! yay to color!!

That night we had our neighbors and some squadron friends over to watch the the opening ceremony for the Olympics and had a great time, though the opening ceremony left us quite bored... ha! Layne had to work the air show Saturday and Sunday, so we didn't get to see much of each other (yet again).  I took our neighbors (Dan and Tricia) to the airshow on Saturday so they could see the Thunderbirds and also to see what Layne flies! We had a good time and I'm so thankful to have awesome neighbor friends out here, especially when Tricia is also a personal trainer like me! I now have a walking/workout partner close-by which rocks. =D  As every week goes by I'm doing a little more with the house, gaining friends, and getting used to the back and forth weather out here.  The only thing lacking right now is my presence at the gym.... yikes. I've been walking/running, and doing stuff at home, but goodness I can tell I've been without the gym for far too long! Tricia and I have started doing the stairs near our homes as well-it's over 100 stairs that join the trails throughout the area.  Stairs are an AWESOME way to get your cardio in as well as toning all aspects of your tush and legs! So if you hate running like me, climb some stairs and push yourself! Thankfully, my Advocare regimen is steady again and it is preserving what muscle I DO still have. =)

But holy cow I love the Olympics!! It excites me and pumps me up so much to see so many unbelievable men and women competing at the highest level of competition against athletes from around the world.  For 2 (ish) weeks you can forget about all the stresses of life and the constant political hoorah that constantly surrounds us.  For 2 weeks you can see people competing for your country and feel so proud that these "chosen few" represent such a great nation.  Yes, I LOVE the Olympics.  Especially gymnastics and volleyball...eeeekkk!!! Way to go Fab Five for bringing home the gold; and to Michael Phelps for being the most decorated Olympian ever... wow!  As Layne and I were watching last night, he made a comment about feeling so lazy to be sitting and watching while these people who are in unbelievable shape are still pushing their bodies to the limit day after day and we're doing nothing... blah. haha  He and I are both in a workout rut and hate it.  He has way more of a reason than I, since he barely has time in his day to eat lunch; and his schedule is only getting busier.  Welcome to the life of the air force though! It's an amazing, frustrating, thrilling, and exhausting life.  But much like these athletes, the purpose and reason behind the craziness is united: to serve our country.  Now, it's back to work I go- cleaning and painting! What sports are your favorites? Get out today and train like an athlete, it'll make you feel better!

Over 2 Weeks Already?!

Holy cow I cannot believe its been over 2 weeks already since we moved into our home.  This entire month has been so incredibly busy! We've pretty much been consumed by fixing the house and escaping when we can on the weekends.  Here are some more pictures as we've progressed through the days of remodeling!

the garage
ohhh goodness...

our Master bath before

the hideous mirrors...

progress!
will add trim around mirrors eventually!
Master bedroom before
Master bedroom after!

this project took ALL DAY! Layne rocks

kitchen progress...
So as you can see I'm slowly getting there.  Nothing is decorated really and I lack the creative ability to make my vision for each room really shine through- and lack the wonderful resources (oh how I miss my Hobby Lobby and Big Lots!) Oh well, it'll get there eventually!

Last weekend we set off with our friends Andrew and Lisa to fish for salmon (reds) on the Kenai River!  While driving on the Turnagain Arm (the only hwy in and out) we came to a dead halt.  We were waiting in 25 miles of stopped traffic due to an armed kidnapper on the loose! How crazy is that?! After over an hour of waiting, we were finally driving again  and 3 1/2 hours later we made it to our "campsite"; an overflow parking lot due to the actual campground being full. Unfortunately we weren't able to fish any since the holdup took so long, but we set up camp, went to dinner, and made a campfire in our fire pit.  The next morning we woke up to rain- and it rained pretty much the whole time we were there.  *sigh*  Andrew and Lisa went dip netting, or "dipping" that morning and Layne set off to fish while I ran to the store for breakfast!  I eventually made it out to the river with Layne, and the trail there and back was not for the average joe (i.e- if you don't like nature, this would not have been your cup of tea...!). The trail took us maneuvering down a very steep (and now muddy) hill, through trees, stumps, and TONS of mud.
the steep hill. this picture doesn't do it justice...
Let's just say that since we've moved out here, my fashion sense is
off the charts! Check out my lovely PINK waders... I mean,
its practically runway model material... ;)  Under those bad boys
I had 2/3 layers on and then a raincoat over everything else.
Standing in 40 below water up to your waist (or in my case my stomach/chest at times!) gets very very cold.
ready to go!

fisherman lined up in the river...

My first steps in the river were crazy.  There were too many people in the river so we had to wade down a bit... well wading down river a bit was not a good idea.
I asked Layne if he was testing me by taking me through the death rapids as my first experience out here! It was seriously scary, and I could barely stand up due to the strong current and slippery rocks under my feet.
I had no clue how the others were calmly fishing (aka "flipping") when I was barely standing, until we waded back to where we came in originally and it was MUCH calmer.  Phew! After many hours in the water and many exciting fights with the salmon that turned into disappointments, I finally was able to land ONE big salmon.  Layne did much better than I and caught 6 total for the two days.  (though we technically caught over 15 each!) The rain was a drab, but in all it was a very fun weekend.  I FINALLY got to eat some real, wild Alaskan salmon that we personally caught.  Now that's one for the books! ;)

Phew!

*****( I wrote this post 2 weeks ago...it is old but wanted to still share! Updated posts to follow...!!)******
Holy sore body! Lemmetellya, remodeling, or just repainting an entire house is EXHAUSTING!! My hubby and I have literally been going at our new home since last Wednesday! (which explains my lack of posts!) I am happy to say that we are "done" painting, or at least done with painting the necessary areas before our new carpet arrives.  Our walls are textured, so we had to go over everything twice (and some areas more than three times!) just to fill in all the textured div-vets and ridges. We quickly realized that painting on textured surfaces required more than just your standard 2-coat process, it required an extra large dose of OMPH! That extra omph goes away quickly, especially in the higher areas that I can't reach.  I was disappointed at first I was not going to have time to work out, but that quickly changed! The omph took everything I had- my arms, my shoulders, my back, my whole core....everything went into each roll of the roller brush to apply this paint! After it's all said and done though, we are very proud to have done everything ourselves and did it together. =)  Here are some before and after pictures... (remember, this is only for the paint...nothing else has been done yet!)

My red accent wall fireplace =) (part of dining room and kitchen too)

Yesterday we tackled the dreaded floors. That job was ten times harder than painting. The smell, the ripping up the carpet, and the tedious task of pulling out the staples so we could Killz the floor was extreme.  Layne and I were both exhausted after that day was over.
nasty carpet!
But I'm so glad to have gotten the nasty carpets up.  Tomorrow we get our new carpet, so I need to sleep to prepare for the exciting days ahead!

Tah tah for now!

Oh Happy Day!

Hey ya'll!! I guess this is a day late, but Happy Independence Day!  Today is the day... we close on our house! It will officially be ours.  =D
I cannot begin to express how happy I am and how thankful we both are for allowing God to show us this house and let everything fall into place! We got up early yesterday morning and went to Lowe's to get our paint then set off for our house!! After spending nearly an hour prepping, we set to work.  Layne and I painted from 11:30am to 7:00 pm!  Boy howdy, my neck, arms, and hands were killin me, but I enjoyed every minute and will keep enjoying it.  We finally called it a day and went a few miles into the "neighborhood" to meet up with our friends Dan and Michelle and hang out with a few others from their squadron.  So we ended our fourth of July meeting new people and eating hamburgers and brauts with the rest of the country.

I've got to go paint now, but I'll most definitely post some pictures in my next post... the before and after shots! Oh, I'm painting some of the living room a deep, bright red (it's the "prawn" area if any of you know what that is!?!!)... what do you think?!

Have a wonderful Thursday and time with family! Off for round two of painting now! =)

A Moody Week

Wow I can't believe I haven't posted all week! I'm so sorry! I guess this week has been a bit rough on me...not in a detrimental kinda way because I'm fine, healthy and all of my family is too.  My emotions have been a bit elevated though, due to Layne being gone a lot with work and us still living in the TLF, just WAITING (and waiting) to move into our house.  I only have one friend here, Michelle, and when she is busy I'm alone most of the day. Soo I've been doing the "get to know the area thing"; driving around aimlessly in Anchorage, going to stores, browsing for things for our house that I can't purchase yet... basically just killing time.  I workout whenever I feel like it, which is nice.  I purchased Jillian Michaels' new Yoga Burn DVD Wednesday morning and it was great.  Yoga is seriously my favorite new go-to for a good muscle burn without the incessant heavy breathing usually associated with cardio. ha! (cardio is still necessary, so don't completely skip it!)

Back to my main point- emotional basket case.  Me. Yup. I'm just so ready to be productive and working on our house; and not feeling lonely! I have a lot to remodel and can only read so many DIY magazines, endlessly search online pictures and tips, and pin things on Pinterest til my brain is numb! Luckily, an email from our awesome realtor Angela said that if all the paperwork comes back and the inspector is happy, we can get an early move in! Woop woop! Time to rip up some pee-saturated floors and get some new carpet put in! (That's just the first and most necessary project...)  Anyways, I'm much better now and know that it's only a few more days until we start the crazy-busy-awesome fun of moving into our very first home together! =D

On another note and the main reason for this post is of the events that happened yesterday; the ruling of keeping Obamacare going.  Not to get too political, and know this upfront- I have a view and you have a view.  If we don't agree then sobeit, but I'm not here to debate politics or get in any confrontations, but I'm going to speak my mind and feelings.  I must say that I was very upset by the outcome from our Supreme Court.  I have always held a very proud and very honored stance for my our country, especially for the men and women who have proudly fought to give us our rights, and stood/stand united, fighting and believing in our freedoms.  But Thursday left me, yet again, humiliated...and mad.  Mad in a different way now. I am no longer just an onlooker into the lives of our military, I am part of it (though not in any way to be deserving a thank-you or honor).   I am now the wife of a military man, a man who dedicates his entire being to serving our country.  He is one of MANY.  I am now able to get on military bases and see the goings on inside.  One of my first experiences on base: I was walking out from the commissary and it was 5pm.  The National Anthem started over the loud speakers and everyone stopped dead in their tracks- cars even pulled over.  All eyes and bodies were looking at the huge flag flying overhead, paying respect and showing honor to what that flag, our American flag symbolizes.  I had chills all over my body and let me tell you, I couldn't have been prouder to be among these people.  Everyday, on any base you visit or live on, this happens.  There is a camaraderie amongst military members and their families like no other.  You are probably wondering what this all has to do with yesterday's ruling...
It made me mad because it is one step closer to the downward spiral this country is in and has been in, (even more-so in the last few years).  I was angry because I see firsthand now the dedication, the hard work, the unbelievably long hours, and the immense training many, like my husband, go through every day to be ready to protect a country that cares less and less about them.  The disrespect people have with our military, those who protect, serve, and defend our country, because they want "world peace" is infuriating to me.  They refuse to vote for good leaders and instead protest outside because they aren't collecting enough welfare.  They disrespect servicemen because they don't believe in guns or killing and want our troops pulled from areas where they are ultimately protecting our nation's soil.  I get it to an extent- I ultimately would love to see peace among the world and not have warfare.  At the same time, I think it's beyond foolish to be unprepared and make ourselves open to attacks of every kind.  This country has become so divided and so unbelievably and disgustingly "PC" that no matter what you say or how you say it you are offending someone.  If I talked about my love and passion for cheddar cheese and said all other cheeses were horrible compared to cheddar, someone would be offended and start some type of cheesy debate. (<-- no pun intended... ;P  ha!)
If I remember my history correctly (ehem), our country was founded on GOD. "...One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." It was fought for with a pricetag so high it meant many soldiers' lives, to keep it FREE.  To keep it controlled by a government that wouldn't interfere so much that it would make decisions for us and tell us what we "have" to buy and what we "have" to use, etc.  By giving the government more control guess what happens- no more dreams of owning your own coffee shop or music store, or anything for that matter.  Oh, and if you have a job and work day in and day out (as um, ALL of our ancestors did, making us what we are today) well, the government gets most of the money you worked for so they can be nice and "fair" and ration it out to those who aren't working.  And in a good many cases, who aren't TRYING to work.  Hey, getting money and having to do nothing? Of course they're in! It's all just a bunch of crap and the ruling made us one notch closer to us swirling down the porcelain throne.
It's July 4th next week and it breaks my heart that this is the only time you see the American flag around so much. It's also saddening knowing how many died for their country and the upcoming generations, only to see those generations disrespect it.  It's not big businesses that hurt us.  It's not military members.  It's not hard workers.  We are all hurting each other with this "feeling" that everyone deserves the same thing and it should be fair.  Fairness has an important role in life. Like justice, peace, war, sadness, joy, wealth, poverty, honor...the list goes on.  This is LIFE- and life isn't always fair. Like Ecclesiastes 3:1-13, "there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under Heaven;".  Some may be rich, then poor.  Some may start out poor then become rich.  We ALL undergo hardships and trials.  It's called LIFE. We are all unique and with the original foundation of this country we are all given a chance to see our dreams come true- whatever they may be.  =)
Ok- I'm OFF my soapbox.  No more politics. This is a happy blog. :P  But like previously mentioned, there is a time for everything, so I had have a right to be mad. haha.  I wish we could all stand united once again.  But many many many thanks to those who still believe in what this country stands for- what our flag represents, and what our military men and women and families sacrifice everyday to keep it a free nation.  Join with me in lifting up our country in prayer, every day.  I am sad to say that it took yesterday's events to again bring me to my knees and lift our country up and hand it over to God.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Saturday and glorious Sunday! We are going to go catch some fish again and pick out our carpet from Lowe's tomorrow!! Woop woop! This time next week we will be official homeowners! ;)

tah tah for now (and please don't hate me for bringing up politics...!),
